Message from the Chair

Learn more about the vision and meaning behind 'Distilling Excellence' and what to expect at the conference from this year's chair of the Hotel Leadership Conference, Tim Hassell MI.

Hospitality is a fantastic industry to work in and this is primarily due to the innovation we consistently see within it. From new technology and sustainable practices to new leadership techniques and focuses on wellbeing, there are always exciting ways to empower your staff, delight your guests and help improve day-to-day operations.

With that said, it’s easy to fall into the trap of trying too many new things, ultimately losing sight of what makes your hotel successful. In my career across many successful hotels and now in my current role as Estates Director for Thurelstone Estates, I witness the industry professionals sometimes overcomplicating their approach instead of staying true to their roots and focusing on what they do best.

It's from this that this year’s conference theme, ‘Distilling Excellence’ was born – the idea of taking a step back to step forward and really understand what makes your hotel special, ensuring you are true to your proposition and values and doing what you do best, and not overcomplicating things for the wrong reasons. 

Our overall aim with Distilling Excellence is to therefore empower hoteliers to be able to go back to their hotels and effectively review their strategy and operations, to really question what is at the heart of what you do.

Using this helicopter view of the businesses, we are encouraged to ask the important questions - What does our hotel do well? What do we want to be known for? Does what we currently do help improve the overall customer experience? 

Ultimately, Distilling Excellence helps us to ensure we are prioritising what is most important, embracing both our business and our people to better provide the unforgettable experiences our guests have come to love. With our fantastic lineup of speakers across the two-day conference, there will be plenty of opportunities, ideas and insights to help achieve exactly that.

From better understanding the current financial landscape to developing high-performing teams, from marketing your hotel effectively to improving your hotel’s strategy and culture, our carefully curated programme of speakers is devised by hoteliers for hoteliers, all to help you distil excellence in your own hotel.

Alongside our lineup of guest speakers and presenters, the Hotel Leadership Conference also provides you with the ability to network with over 400 senior hoteliers and exhibitors. This unique opportunity allows us all to meet faces both new and old, sharing experiences and helping us all to learn from one another.

As a not-for-profit organisation, your attendance at the conference also helps invest in future talent. Any financial surplus generated by the Master Innholders is donated to the Master Innholders Charitable Trust which helps to fund Innholder Scholarships and the Aspiring Leaders Diploma.

Chairing this year’s conference has been an eye-opening and immensely rewarding experience and I look forward to seeing you all for an exciting conference in which we can all distil excellence in 2025 and beyond.
